Scripts seal scribe block semicursive cursive
The images on this page represent five ways of writing the character for "eternity" (ei). The form in the center, below, is block script (kaisho). This is the script most commonly used in print.
The image above represents seal script (tensho), the form that most closely resembles the earliest Chinese characters. Today it is used chiefly on seals. Scribe script (reisho) is represented by the image above. Today it is typically seen on plaques, carvings, and calligraphic scrolls.
The images to the left and right represent, respectively, semicursive (gyosho) and cursive (sosho) forms of the character.
