The calligraphy paper rests on a shitajiki,a sheet of felt that prevents ink from soaking through to the table surface. The paper is held down by a bunchin,or paperweight, placed at the top of the sheet.
Finally, to the left of the paper is the stone seal (in),carved with the calligrapher's name or pen name in tensho script. The calligrapher stamps an impression of the seal on the paper in red ink to officially "sign" his or her work.
