Scripts seal scribe block semicursive cursive
Block script, or kaisho, evolved from the Chinese scribe script around the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. Clear and easy to read with distinct brush strokes, kaisho became the standard script style for Chinese characters, and remains so today in both China and Japan.
On the top right is an excerpt from an 8th-century Japanese scroll; below are two 19th-century examples of kaisho.
