Student Web Accounts

UCSB Extension provides a web account for each student registered in the class. You will use your account to store your project folders and display your homework assignments. You will be given a username and password on the first day of class to access your account.

The web address for your account is "http://discordia.xlrn.ucsb.edu/~youruserID". To access your account via FTP, use "discordia.xlrn.ucsb.edu" as your "Host" address, then enter your userID and password.

For more details about how to access and use your web account, review Lesson 1.

Attendance Policy

To get the most out of this course, you must come to class. If you have a conflict that will prevent your attendance, please notify your instructor in advance by email or telephone. You will not be penalized for an excused absence, but homework must still be completed on time.

If you miss a class without notifying the instructor, your absence will be marked "unexcused." Three unexcused absences will reduce your final grade a full step.

Quizzes

Most classes will begin with a brief quiz on the material covered in the previous class. You will take your quizzes online. Once you've taken a quiz in class for the first time, you can take it again as many times as you like. Only your highest quiz scores will be counted toward your final grade.

Grades

Your final grade for the course will be based on the following:

  • Attendance and active participation in class exercises: 30%.
  • Timely completion of weekly homework assignments: 30%.
  • Weekly quizzes: 10%.
  • Final project: 30%.

Lab Access

Registered students are entitled to use the Jalama Lab in Phelps Hall for work related to this class for the duration of the course. The lab is available on a first-come, first-served basis during "Open Lab" hours. Check the Jalama Lab Schedule online for open hours.
